Google’s video generator comes to more customers

Google’s video generator is coming to a few more customers — Google Cloud customers, to be precise.

On Tuesday, Google announced that Veo, its AI model that can generate short video clips from images and prompts, will be available in private preview for customers using Vertex AI, Google Cloud’s AI development platform.

Google says that the launch will enable one customer, Quora, to bring Veo to its Poe chatbot platform, and another, Oreo owner Mondelez International, to create marketing content with its agency partners.

“We created Poe to democratize access to the world’s best generative AI models,” Poe product lead Spencer Chan said in a statement. “Through partnerships with leaders like Google, we’re expanding creative possibilities across all AI modalities.”

Invent 2024: What to expect and how to watch Amazon’s biggest event of the year

Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) biggest conference of the year has begun, and all signs point to it being an eventful one. AWS re:Invent 2024 kicked off in Las Vegas on Sunday, with sessions scheduled to run through December 6. A keynote address featuring AWS CEO Matt Garman marks the start of today’s programming, starting at 8 a.m. PT sharp.

AWS is putting together an archive of major keynotes and discussions on their YouTube channel, and we’ll be covering everything that’s announced onstage. Keep your eyes peeled for that, as well as for our stories popping up throughout the course of re:Invent.

Notably, this is Garman’s first re:Invent as AWS’ CEO. His predecessor, Adam Selipsky, stepped down in May after just three years at the helm.

ChatGPT: Everything you need to know about the AI-powered chatbot

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm since its launch in November 2022. What started as a tool to hyper-charge productivity through writing essays and code with short text prompts has evolved into a behemoth used by more than 92% of Fortune 500 companies.

That growth has propelled OpenAI itself into becoming one of the most-hyped companies in recent memory. And its latest partnership with Apple for its upcoming generative AI offering, Apple Intelligence, has given the company another significant bump in the AI race.

2024 also saw the release of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s new flagship omni model for ChatGPT. GPT-4o is now the default free model, complete with voice capabilities. But after demoing GPT-4o, OpenAI paused one of its voices, Sky, after allegations that it was mimicking Scarlett Johansson’s voice in “Her.”

OpenAI is facing internal drama, including the sizable exit of co-founder and longtime chief scientist Ilya Sutskever as the company dissolved its Superalignment team. OpenAI is also facing a lawsuit from Alden Global Capital-owned newspapers, including the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, for alleged copyright infringement, following a similar suit filed by The New York Times last year.
